Toronto’s No Frills pilot transforms the way you shop for groceries

In Toronto’s busy grocery aisles, a new pilot project is quietly rewriting the way budget-conscious shoppers tally up their baskets. At select No Frills stores, the hum of conversation is now joined by the soft glow of smartphones—and a promise of real-time transparency.

Loblaw Companies Limited, parent of No Frills, has launched pcogo, an experimental program testing the boundaries of self-service shopping in the heart of Toronto. Only three stores—Jordan’s on King and Shaw, Bo’s at Richmond and John, Jesse’s at Mount Pleasant and Eglinton—have been tapped for this trial, making the experience exclusive and, for some, a badge of savvy shopping.

Eligibility is tightly woven with loyalty: only PC Optimum members with at least 30,000 earned points can participate. Once inside, these select shoppers check in by scanning an in-store QR code or enabling smartphone location. The PC Optimum app springs to life, offering instant access to current deals, live pricing, and, most crucially, an estimated running total as items land in the cart.

The system is straightforward. Shoppers scan products as they browse, watching their spending accumulate in real time. Loyalty rewards accrue visibly, and the shock of an oversized bill at checkout recedes. The finale is a dedicated self-checkout lane for pcogo participants, pitched by Loblaw as a way to, in their words, “significantly reduce wait times.”

For residents navigating Toronto’s relentless cost pressures, the implications are clear. The technology nudges shoppers toward disciplined spending, stripping mystery from the final bill and bringing budgeting to the forefront of the grocery experience. The seamless integration with the PC Optimum app also signals a broader shift: as retailers turn to digital solutions, the line between bargain-hunting and data-driven decision-making grows thinner.

As the pilot continues, its success—or lack thereof—will help determine whether pcogo’s mix of autonomy, transparency, and efficiency finds a permanent place in the No Frills universe. For now, Toronto’s chosen few are scanning their way to a new kind of certainty at the checkout.
