Home Hardware joins forces with YMCA to double donations for local families

The morning after GivingTuesday, the tally stood at $34,000—a sum not conjured by a faceless algorithm, but raised, dollar by dollar, by the hands of neighbours determined to see their community thrive.

In an era when charitable giving can feel like an afterthought, the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka’s campaign drew a groundswell of support across Simcoe County, the District of Muskoka, and Parry Sound. The driving force? A simple promise: that every dollar would help a local family access the kind of support that transforms lives, from affordable child care and youth programs to employment services and newcomer resources.

This GivingTuesday, the YMCA’s cause struck a particular chord thanks to an alliance with Home Hardware stores throughout the region. Storeowners pledged to match donations up to $6,300, effectively multiplying the potential impact for every gift received. The result: not just a fundraising win, but a tangible expansion of access to critical programs—programs that, for one in ten participants, simply wouldn’t be possible without financial assistance.

Jill Tettmann, president and CEO of the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka, didn’t mince words: “Our local donors truly transform their communities. Together, we create meaningful experiences for individuals and families—moments that build confidence, spark connections, and foster belonging across the region.” The gratitude for Home Hardware partners, from Barrie to Parry Sound, was equally plain. Their leadership, she noted, set the tone for what collective action can achieve.

For many in Barrie, Midland, Orillia, and beyond, these are not abstract benefits. They are the everyday reality of children discovering their strengths at camp, parents accessing job support, and newcomers finding a foothold in a new home. The ripple effect of this campaign, measured in confidence built and barriers removed, will be felt long after the tally slips out of the headlines.

With the holiday season still unfolding, the YMCA reminds residents that the need endures. For those willing to give, the next life changed may be closer than they think.
