Toronto’s offence fizzles after historic home run

George Springer sent Rogers Centre into a frenzy with a leadoff home run, but the Toronto Blue Jays’ offence fizzled as the Seattle Mariners grabbed Game 1 of the ALCS 3-1, leaving fans stunned on Thanksgiving weekend.

The anticipation was off the charts before first pitch Sunday night. Toronto, back in the American League Championship Series for the first time in nearly a decade, had the rest advantage, a raucous home crowd, and their ace Kevin Gausman on the mound. Springer’s solo shot in the first—a franchise first for a postseason leadoff homer—had the building shaking and every Jays fan believing this was their night.

But after the fireworks, Toronto’s bats went quiet. Despite patient at-bats and forcing Mariners starter Bryce Miller to work early, the Blue Jays couldn’t string together hits. Seattle found their answer with Cal Raleigh’s game-tying homer, pulling Gausman out of his rhythm and prompting manager John Schneider to turn to the bullpen. The Mariners chipped away with key singles from Jorge Polanco, while Toronto’s lineup went down in order inning after inning. The final blow came in the eighth, as Polanco’s second RBI single stretched the lead and all but sealed the game.

Manager John Schneider spoke before the game about trusting the team’s approach and not trying to be something they’re not. Yet, the bats that powered Toronto here simply didn’t show up when it counted. Bo Bichette’s absence loomed large over the lineup, and even with Anthony Santander back in the mix, the needed spark never came.

Jays fans, loud and proud at Rogers Centre and in viewing parties across the city, now face the harsh reality that this series will be a grind. The chance to capitalize on a travel-weary Mariners squad slipped away, making Game 2 a must-win if Toronto wants to keep their dream alive. Momentum has shifted west, and the Blue Jays must dig deep to reclaim it.
